Auckland’s regional parks are a vital part of the region’s commitment to conservation, recreation, and cultural heritage. They provide essential habitats for native species while offering opportunities for the public to connect with nature. Shakespear Regional Park exemplifies this approach, with managed native plantings, coastal ecosystems, and visitor facilities supporting both environmental protection and community engagement.

Ecosystem

As part of the O Mahurangi – Penlink project, Kauri Park delivered an offset mitigation planting programme within Shakespear Regional Park, establishing 163,000 eco-sourced native plants to restore habitat, enhance biodiversity, and build long-term ecological resilience.

Prior to planting, we prepared the site by spraying 14 hectares of kikuyu and gorse, along with targeted control of convolvulus and blackberry. Treatments included haloxyfop and glyphosate with organosilicone and red marker dye, ensuring the best conditions for establishment.

With over 30 years of expertise in large-scale restoration, Kauri Park completed the project well ahead of schedule, creating a thriving offset for Penlink.
