As part of the O Mahurangi Penlink project, an offset mitigation planting programme was required at Shakespear Regional Park to compensate for the ecological impacts associated with the new transport corridor.
The 14-hectare planting area required substantial weed control before planting could begin. Kikuyu and gorse were the primary species to be treated, alongside targeted control of convolvulus and blackberry. Treatments included haloxyfop and glyphosate with organosilicone and red marker dye, applied across the site ahead of planting operations.
Kauri Park Projects delivered site preparation, logistics coordination, planting, and ongoing maintenance across the park, with 163,000 eco-sourced plants installed to restore habitat, enhance biodiversity, and build long-term ecological resilience. Working within a regional park introduced additional site management requirements around public access and environmental compliance.
Working closely with Fulton Hogans Landscape Supervisor, the project was completed ahead of schedule, delivering the offset mitigation requirements for the Penlink transport corridor.
